Acrylic on canvas
38 x 50"
I think of this work, acrylic painted on canvas, as a narrative, linking my earlier aspirations with surreal landscapes and figures, to my present explorations in drawing. I return to the same characters, sometimes more defined, sometimes less, as if they too are moving along with the narrative, short stories littering the landscape of what appears to be a dream.
Embedded in the painting is “the Red Jar” perhaps the vessel from which all has come, or the repository of all that has been, and is to be…an archetypal symbol of creation.
An alterative title to “the Red Jar” is “La Pedrera”…the Quarry. I have been influenced by the Spanish Surrealists, Salvador Dali, Juan Miro, as well as the painting and writings of Vasily Kandinsky. My connections to their surreal Spanish landscapes are reflected in my painting, using their ochres, and umbers, their sky blues and Mediterranean greens, with the idea that we all come from the earth and go back to earth through the quarry of life.
